Bournemouth-born Commodore Wells started his profession at sea on board tankers and bulk carriers in South East Asia earlier than transitioning to cruise delivery in 1992, first with Cunard then Princess Cruises, P&O Cruises and P&O Cruises Australia earlier than returning to Cunard.
